Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 has Traveled Farther Than Any Other Human-Made Object

NASA's Voyager 1 is a space probe that was launched in 1977 to fly by Jupiter and Saturn. In August 2012, Voyager 1 crossed into interstellar space and continues to collect data today. It is the farthest spacecraft from Earth, and has traveled farther than any other human-made object.

Voyager 1 was launched on September 5, 1977, along with its twin probe, Voyager 2. Both probes were designed to study the outer planets of the solar system, and both have far exceeded their original mission objectives. Voyager 2 flew by Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and is now on its way out of the solar system. Voyager 1 flew by Jupiter and Saturn, and then entered interstellar space in August 2012.

Voyager 1 is now in the heliosheath, the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere. The heliosheath is a turbulent region of space that is filled with charged particles from the Sun. Voyager 1 is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). RTGs use the heat from the decay of radioactive isotopes to generate electricity. The RTGs on Voyager 1 are expected to last until 2025. After that, the probe will no longer be able to communicate with Earth.
