Stricter Environmental Regulations Are On The Horizon For The Cruise Industry As Traditional Cruise Ships Will No Longer Be Allowed To Use Heavy Fuel Oil Hfo In 2023
Cruise Ships to be Banned from Using Heavy Fuel Oil in 2023
Stricter environmental regulations are on the horizon for the cruise industry, as traditional cruise ships will no longer be allowed to use heavy fuel oil (HFO) in 2023.
HFO is a thick, black oil with a tar-like consistency. It is the most polluting type of marine fuel and is a major contributor to air pollution.
The ban on HFO is part of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) MARPOL Annex VI regulations, which aim to reduce air pollution from ships. The regulations will come into effect on January 1, 2023.
The ban on HFO will have a significant impact on the cruise industry. Cruise ships are among the largest and most polluting vessels in the world. A single cruise ship can consume up to 200 metric tons of fuel per day.
In order to comply with the new regulations, cruise lines will have to switch to cleaner-burning fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or marine gas oil (MGO). LNG is a more expensive fuel than HFO, but it is much cleaner and produces fewer emissions.
The switch to cleaner fuels will likely lead to higher fuel costs for cruise lines. However, it is also likely to improve air quality and reduce the environmental impact of the cruise industry.
