Akira Schmid: A Rising Star in the NHL

Early Career and Breakout Season

Akira Schmid, born on May 12, 2000, is a Swiss professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing for the New Jersey Devils. After starting his career in Switzerland, Schmid made his North American debut in the 2018-19 season with the Utica Comets, the Devils' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate.

2022-23 Season and NHL Debut

Entering the 2022-23 season, Schmid was expected to be fourth in the Devils' goaltending depth chart. However, injuries to two other goalies gave him an opportunity to impress. On November 26, 2022, Schmid made his NHL debut, stopping 31 of 34 shots faced against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Playoff Success

As the 2023 NHL playoffs approached, Schmid had established himself as the Devils' starting goalie. Despite not playing in the regular season finale, he won all seven of his starts in the playoffs, including a 30-save performance in Game 7 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Schmid's play helped the Devils reach the second round, where they were eventually eliminated by the Carolina Hurricanes.
