Madrid, Spain - May 7, 2022 - Carlos Alcaraz defeated 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal 3-6, 6-4, 14-12 in a thrilling Madrid Open clash on Friday.
The 19-year-old Spaniard claimed his first victory over Nadal in three meetings, and in doing so, became the youngest player to defeat Nadal on clay since 2003.
The match was a marathon affair, lasting three hours and 38 minutes. Alcaraz saved five set points in the third set tiebreak, including three on Nadal's serve.
"It's an amazing feeling," Alcaraz said after the match. "Rafa is my idol and to beat him is a dream come true."
Nadal, who is now 5-2 in head-to-head matches against Alcaraz, said he was impressed by the young Spaniard's performance.
"He's a great player," Nadal said. "He's going to be a big star in the future."
The victory is a major boost for Alcaraz's confidence as he prepares for the French Open, which begins on May 22.
Nadal, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back when he competes in the Italian Open next week.
